#office-hours - May 2025

Hi all, new to the slack channel but have been using cloudposse terraform modules for a bit. I'm looking to start incorporating the context provider (https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-provider-context?tab=readme-ov-file). I'm trying to do some simple experiments before I build out a PoC and wondering what i'm doing wrong to add additional tags.

https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-provider-context looks like an awesome way of replacing a load of existing data modules that we end up having dozens of instances of in our stacks

👋🏽 Hello! I hope introductions are OK here.

My former colleague @Jim Park introduced me to SweetOps office hours when we worked at Scribd. Management required us to use the product ("dogfooding", though I resent the term's pejorative connotations) for 60 minutes a month, so I had the podcast version of office hours added to Scribd and then to an internal list of recommended podcasts. 😏 I hope this attracted some new listeners.

I mostly contributed comments via Zoom. I've been away for a year but I'm excited to have joined here on Slack and to be returning on Zoom. I'm old and have worked on software and infrastructure for decades. What impressed me about your office hours is that questions from people new to the profession were always taken seriously and answered constructively. Other communities of experts seem to have little time or patience for newcomers, even if everyone is supposedly welcome.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. I enjoy answering questions about IAM policies; SQL features such as common table expressions (CTEs) and domains (data types); AWS Lambda; and boto3. I've written a lot of Terraform, but I confess 😨 that I prefer CloudFormation [from my perspective: no extra cost for support from AWS; no need to install or update basic IAC software; and a bias against loops, local variables, and known, fixed resource counts, in favor of AWS idioms like Parameter Store, IPAM, IAM policy variables, and attribute-based access control (ABAC) with tags].
